Polymer frontiers: new report explores emerging innovations

Polymer Frontiers: New Report Explores Emerging Innovations

Executive Summary

  • Polymer science has expanded to a scale and complexity that surface-level searches no longer capture, with millions of possible sequences and hundreds of billions of dollars in market value at stake.
  • A new joint report from CAS and PetroChina SAMRI maps the emerging polymer innovation landscape using structure-based search, bibliometrics, patent intelligence, and natural language processing across nearly one million publications.
  • The report equips researchers, investors, and IP professionals with the breadth to see the full landscape and the depth to act on it.

From electronics and healthcare devices to clothing and consumer goods, polymers are some of the most consequential materials ever developed. As the field has grown in scale, it’s also become more complex, with millions of possible sequences to create new polymers and hundreds of billions of dollars in market value.

Identifying promising innovations and prioritizing investments are, consequently, more challenging, particularly as organizations must navigate sustainability expectations, cross-industry applications, and geographic realignment of the competitive landscape. To better understand the state of global polymer innovation, CAS and PetroChina (Shanghai) Advanced Materials Research Institute Co. (SAMRI) developed Polymer Frontiers: A Comprehensive Data-Driven Analysis of Emerging Trends.

The resulting analysis in the report demonstrates why CAS is ideally placed to conduct such a comprehensive investigation. The indexed CAS data, in particular chemical substances drove document retrieval  — a more robust search strategy than using keywords alone. Other CAS-indexed data including concepts allowed for extensive data analysis. Likewise, SAMRI researchers combine fundamental science expertise with large-scale industrial application knowledge to provide a rigorous global perspective on the real-world impacts of polymer materials science.

The report analyzes nearly one million polymer-related publications from the last decade (2015-2025) and identifies 200+ emerging topics in various fields including polymer types and materials, applications, chemistry and synthesis, fillers and additives, properties and performance, processing and manufacturing, composites, and sustainability.

In a research space as vast and complex as polymers, it’s vital to understand the breadth of innovation and how it’s translating into commercial opportunities. Subject matter experts from CAS crafted a comprehensive structure-based search strategy to uncover relevant publications that show where the field is headed (see Figure 2).

Starting with polymer substances in the CAS REGISTRY®, we accessed over five million publications in the CAS Content CollectionTM, the world’s largest curated scientific database. Applying further search parameters narrowed the results to nearly 950,000 documents, to which we applied a multi-dimensional methodological framework combining bibliometric analysis, patent intelligence, and advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques.

NLP-based methods reveal emerging innovations

The amount of relevant polymer-related publications called for AI-driven techniques to efficiently categorize them and make sense of the wider landscape. Our methodology involved extracting candidate phrases from abstract, title, and patent claims and used AI-based classification followed by expert validation to refine categorization. The result is extensive CAS TrendScape maps that represent numerous emerging topics in the polymers field (see Figure 3).

This NLP-based analysis guided the selection of topics such as energy storage systems, electronics, membrane and separation and sustainable polymers, all of which showed growth and a sizeable number of documents associated with them for a deeper dive.

Understanding the next breakthrough in polymers

Polymer Frontiers provides broad and deep analysis thanks to its comprehensive examination of robust data sources merged with market information. In addition to global themes, it dives into:

  • Polymers in energy storage systems.
  • Sustainable polymers.
  • Polymer materials in flexible electronics.
  • Advances in polymer membranes.

With NLP-driven identification of emerging topics backed by human expertise in curation, this full-length report equips researchers with insight into new innovations, along with the context that only comes from decades of experience by scientists who know the field best.
