Muneto Mogi, Ph.D., serves as the Global Head of Chemistry at Novartis Biomedical Research. With over 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical R&D and executive leadership roles within chemistry, he has contributed to global organizations in the USA, Japan, Germany, and Switzerland. During his career, Muneto has advanced over 60 drug discovery projects across multiple therapeutic areas and delivered several clinical candidates, most notably Fabhalta® (iptacopan), discovered under his leadership. Prior to joining Novartis, he held positions at Shionogi and Bayer Healthcare in Japan. Muneto earned a B.A. in chemistry from Boston University and completed his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences at Kyoto Pharmaceutical University. Currently based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, Muneto oversees the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) platform worldwide. This platform encompasses discovery chemistry for a broad range of disease areas, including oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, neuroscience, and immunology. GDC leverages modalities such as small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, chemical biology conjugates, biomaterials, and polymers. Under his direction, GDC continues to pioneer AI-augmented medicinal chemistry through internal tool development and strategic partnerships.
