CAS Newton for CAS IP Finder, is agentic AI designed to help users navigate patent and scientific literature searches more efficiently. Rather than replacing expert searchers, it serves as an intelligent guide that helps you save valuable time by translating natural-language questions into precise STN commands, selecting appropriate databases, and suggesting effective search strategies.

Navigating databases and search fields

One of CAS Newton's core strengths is helping users identify the right databases for their needs. CAS IP Finder contains dozens of specialized databases such as CAPlus, Derwent World Patent Index, INPADOC, CASREACT, FSTA, Ei Compendex, and more. Due to this volume, choosing between them isn't always obvious. CAS Newton evaluates your question and selects the most relevant sources automatically, while explaining its reasoning transparently.  You will always know what it's doing and why.

Substance and chemistry searches

CAS Newton handles chemistry-focused queries by first identifying relevant CAS Registry Numbers®, then searching across appropriate databases with the correct substance role codes. For instance, searching for patents where a specific compound acts as a catalyst will prompt CAS Newton to search both CAplus and CASREACT, combining results and analyzing assignees, priority years, and geographic distribution.

Numeric property searches

CAS Newton can perform numeric range searches. For example, it can find patents that describe specific compound concentration ranges in each application context. When a particular database lacks numeric property search capability, it automatically redirects to alternatives.

Identify common substances in regulatory classes

For complex substance identification tasks, such as finding the most commonly cited PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the literature, CAS Newton can extract large sets of CAS Registry Numbers from relevant documents, filter out unrelated substances (such as those primarily cited as drugs), and compile a structured report with registry numbers, names, InChI keys, and reference counts.

Decode unusual patent numbers

Patent number formats vary significantly by country, and some, like those from India, are notoriously difficult to parse. CAS Newton can take an unfamiliar number format, identify the right database and search field, and return the correct patent record, even when the format differs between fields (such as between the publication number and the original application field).

Patent family analysis

CAS Newton can compile comprehensive patent family reports across multiple databases simultaneously. Given a WO application number, for example, it will search INPADOC, CAPlus, and Derwent World Patents Index, then consolidate the results into a structured table showing country, patent number, publication date, application number, and the source database. It also includes non-conventional family members that may not appear in a single database.

Competitive and landscape intelligence

CAS Newton can support IP landscape analyses by combining assignee data, priority countries, technology classifications, and filing timelines. It can identify emerging companies in a specific country and technology area, comparing filing activity across defined time periods and summarizing technology focus areas.

Building search strategies and vocabularies

For users who want a search hedge rather than executed results, CAS Newton can generate comprehensive synonym lists and controlled vocabulary terms. It can query database thesauri across FSTA, Agricola, and CAB Abstracts to surface preferred indexing terms, helping users build robust, multi-database search strategies from scratch.

Multilingual support

Users can interact with CAS Newton in languages other than English, including Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, and more. It will then respond in the same language while executing searches.

Your AI assistant for IP

CAS Newton for CAS IP Finder brings efficiency to patent and scientific literature research by combining natural-language accessibility with the precision of STN's specialized databases. From substance and chemistry searches to patent family analysis and competitive intelligence, it handles numerous IP research tasks while keeping users informed of its reasoning at every step. To get the most from CAS Newton, users should provide clear context upfront and verify results as they go. When used thoughtfully, CAS Newton functions as a powerful complement to expert searchers.

Practical tips for getting the best results

A few simple habits can significantly improve what you get from CAS Newton.

  1. Be specific. Broad, ambiguous prompts produce best-guess responses. Providing context like the databases you want to include or avoid, your role (e.g., patent examiner assessing patentability), preferred display formats, and clear date boundaries significantly improves output quality.
  2. Set boundaries upfront. Specifying constraints at the start of a conversation, such as which databases to use or how results should be displayed, helps CAS Newton interpret your intent more accurately throughout the session.
  3. Use the Stop button. If CAS Newton heads in an unexpected direction or begins producing more analysis than you need, the stop button lets you interrupt and redirect without losing your place.
  4. Don't use CAS Newton as a follow-up to an existing search. Starting a new CAS Newton session automatically deletes the previous search history.
  5. Verify as you go. Even when CAS Newton makes a wrong field choice or receives an error, it typically self-corrects. However, you can watch the command log to understand what is happening and catch any missteps.
