CAS and CAPES expand collaboration and provide innovative new life science resource, CAS BioFinder™, to students and faculty throughout Brazil
Columbus, Ohio, USA – June 30, 2025 – CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society specializing in scientific knowledge management, is excited to announce the renewal and expansion of our collaboration with CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior), one of the largest educational consortia in the world that provides information resources to over 400 educational and research institutions throughout Brazil via the Portal de Periódicos. This new five-year agreement significantly expands institutions' access to the world’s largest human-curated collection of published science, underscoring a shared vision to accelerate innovation in Brazil and translate scientific knowledge into societal benefits.
CAPES has relied on CAS SciFinder® to enable science education and research for more than a decade. As part of this new agreement, CAPES becomes the first consortium globally to provide participating academic institutions access to the CAS BioFinder Discovery Platform™, a new solution from CAS designed to accelerate drug discovery with unique life sciences content, predictive capabilities, and advanced visualization functionality. The new agreement also nearly doubles the number of institutions with access to CAS solutions through CAPES' Portal de Periódicos.
“Expanding our relationship with CAPES reflects our shared dedication to supporting innovation in Brazil,” said Manuel Guzman, CAS President. “This agreement represents a pivotal step, positioning CAPES institutions as early adopters and influencers of the latest scientific information technology. Empowering students and faculty throughout Brazil with cutting-edge resources is foundational to the future of science and entrepreneurship in Brazil and beyond.”
Another standout element of the collaboration is the CAS Young Ambassadors Program, which fosters peer-to-peer education among students about using scientific information through CAS SciFinder and other CAS resources. CAPES has been instrumental in supporting this initiative and other programs designed to promote entrepreneurial thinking among students.
CAPES' Portal de Periódicos celebrates 25 years of providing Brazilian students with unparalleled access to global scientific information in 2025. “CAPES is more than just an educational consortium; it is a transformative force in Brazilian education,” said Andréa Carvalho Vieira, General Coordinator of CAPES' Portal de Periódicos. “Our collaboration with CAS not only provides leading scientific information resources but also shapes the minds of future innovators. Together, we are committed to educating students and empowering faculty who together can translate scientific discoveries into real-world applications.”
The expanded collaboration has been met with enthusiasm. Carolina Horta Andrade, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Head of Pharmaceutical Projects for the Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at Federal University of Goiás, Brazil, shared, “I am excited about the expanded collaboration between CAS and CAPES. Having access to both of these valuable chemistry and life sciences solutions will greatly enhance the research capabilities in our universities and enable our students to become the next generation of innovation leaders.”
