This event aims to bring together academic leaders, researchers, and students in Bangladesh to explore and discuss innovative strategies for boosting academic research productivity and elevating scientific discoveries.

Dr. Tirayut Vilaivan

Professor, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand

Tirayut Vilaivan obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Oxford in 1996. In the same year, he started his career at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University where he is currently a Professor of Chemistry. He has also held the position of Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science, taking care of research affairs since 2015. His research focuses on the development of efficient and environmentally friendly synthetic methodologies for creating molecules with desirable properties including drugs, bioactive compounds, fluorescent dyes, chemical sensors, biosensors, renewable chemicals, and unnatural molecules with potential applications such as in peptide nucleic acids.

Andrew has been the Regional Sales Manager for Australia and New Zealand for CAS for the last 7 years. Prior to this, Andrew has been a sales leader at analytical instrumentation companies such as Hach and Metrohm, where he was actively engaged in method development for complex analytical challenges. He currently resides in Melbourne and has a degree in applied chemistry from the University of Tasmania.

Dr. S.M. Abdur Rahman

Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Dhaka University

Dr. S.M. Abdur Rahman was born in 1970. He obtained bachelor's and master’s degrees in pharmacy from University of Dhaka in 1993 and 1995, respectively. In 2001, he earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmaceutical Sciences from Osaka University, Japan. He was awarded the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) post-doctoral fellowship and Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowships in 2002 and 2004. After joining as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka in 1997, he became a full professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology in 2012 and was elected as the Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy twice in 2017 and 2019. He also served as the Chairman of Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology from May 2020 to May 2023. Now he is the Director of Biomedical Research Center at the University of Dhaka.

He has attracted grants from national and international funding organizations, including research grants from the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS), JSPS-UGC bilateral grant, Higher Education Quality Enhancement Program (HEQEP) grant, Ministry of Science and Technology of Bangladesh, and Ministry of Education grants. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals and presented his work in 37 international conferences and seminars. His work is also patented. One of his research products is commercially available in USA and Japan. His Ph.D. work has been picked up in a book of graduating students in USA.

He received the TWAS (Third World Academy of Science) Young Scientists Award in 2010 and the Gold Medal Award in Biological Science by Bangladesh Academy of Science in 2019.
