A Look at Recent Patenting Activity in Thin-Film Solar Cells

The most widely used solar cells are made from silicon wafers that efficiently convert light into electrical energy. High manufacturing costs have driven efforts to find more cost-effective solutions. Two options have emerged: dyesensitized organic or polymer solar cells and thin-film solar cells, such as those based on copper indium gallium selenide semiconductors (CIGS). With efficiencies closer to those of silicon solar cells, CIGS solar cells are experiencing a surge of patenting interest, according to CAS databases. STN Global Value Pricing Agreement Supports The Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) in Providing High-Quality and Efficient Examination

The Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) and STN InternationalSM  have signed a Global Value Pricing agreement providing PRV examiners unlimited access to the high-quality patent, non-patent and substance content unique to STN.

"PRV strives to be among the top authorities within our area regarding short delivery times and high processing and examination quality. STN helps us to accomplish this by their modern and efficient platform for retrieving updated information from relevant databases,” comments Johan Winther, Head of Patent Information at PRV. “Our patent examiners highly appreciate the new STN platform since searches now can be done without limitation of possible hits. Unlimited access under Global Value Pricing will simplify administration and ensure that we can make the best use of this valuable resource.”

The complete press release is available on the CAS website.

Broad Structure Searching in CAS REGISTRYSM  on New STN: Now It Runs!

The vastly increased search power of new STN offers significant benefits over classic STN when conducting a substructure search on broad, non-specific structure queries.

When a sample structure search query indicates “INCOMPLETE” for both online and batch, in classic STN, new STN can help. Read more here.

Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) Combination Set Data Now Available in CAplusSM, INPADOCDB and USPAT Databases

As of September 28, 2014, CPC Combination Set data can be searched in the following STN databases: CASM/CAplus, INPADOCDB and USPATFULL/USPAT2/USPATOLD.

Benefits of searching CPC Combination Sets include:

  • Unique access points. Many CPCs only appear as part of a combination set in the record
  • Precision. Searching for CPCs occurring in the same CPC Combination Set may provide more relevant answers than searching for CPCs co-occurring anywhere in a patent record
  • Value for novelty searching. The patents retrieved from a search for multiple CPCs in a single combination set are likely to be of interest to those assessing the novelty of an invention

STN Databases Process Recent Surge in U.S. Patent Publications

STN customers should be aware that, due to recent publication of the surge of patent applications filed in the days before implementation of the America Invents Act in 2012, an unusually large volume of US patent application data has been entering STN databases in recent weeks. This increased volume may lead to larger than expected answer sets for searches and alerts in databases containing US patent applications.
