  1. Open or restore the Result Set Manager window.

  2. Select a result set and click View Results.

The CAS Registry BLAST® Report window displays with the result of your similarity search.

Multiple reports: One to four reports can be viewed at a time, as set in Max No. of concurrent Reports in your STN® Online BLAST settings.

Section

Explanation

Title bar

A bar that displays at the top of the window labeled "CAS Registry BLAST® Report – Result name."

If you did not assign a name to your original query, the system-assigned name is used.

Menu bar

Accesses the BLAST® Report File, Edit, View Search, Tools, and Help menus.

Result Set Information Line

A single-line summary for this result set that includes:

  • Unique Sequences: Total number of non-redundant subject sequences retrieved
  • Redundant: Number of redundant sequences retrieved
  • Selected Results: Number of sequences that you have selected for further operations

Example:

Unique sequences: 161     Redundant: 6    Selected: 4

Alignment Summary Area

Alignment Scores color key

A key associating score ranges to the colors of the sequence bars.

Color

Bit Score

Red (highest scores) >=200
Pink 80 - 200
Green 50 - 80
Blue 40 - 50
Black <40

Example:
Green sequence bars in the scrollable sequence bar area represent sequences with scores from 50 to 80.

Alignment Summary bar

To select or deselect answers in a score range:
One-step procedure   Click (toggle) the Alignment Scores button for that range.

Query Sequence Length Bar

A bar or linear "map" the same length as the query (input) sequence. Tick mark numbers show the position of the correspondence between the query sequence and the subject (similar) sequences.

Alignment summary

Sequence Bars

A group of colored bars, each representing a result sequence and showing the position(s) at which the result sequence is similar to the input sequence.

Sequence bars show their score range by color, according to the alignment scores color key. The most similar hits are uppermost. A hash pattern (not shown here) indicates a gap in similarity between two or more distinct regions of similarity within the same sequence hit.

To see the sequence name associated with a bar:

One-step procedure

Scroll (if necessary) to the sequence bar and position your mouse over it.

The chemical name and/or CAS Registry Number display directly below.

Mouse over to show sequence name

To see the alignment details for a sequence:

One-step procedure

Click on the sequence bar.

The alignment details for that sequence move to the top of the scrollable Alignment Details section.

Sequence Name

Text area that displays the chemical name of the sequence. To display the sequence name, position the mouse over the sequence bar.

Updating sequence names: If a sequence name is now assigned to a sequence that was previously listed as "Index name not yet assigned," the report is updated with the new name at this time.

Alignment Details Area

Plus (minus) icon

Click the expander button to show or hide details for that sequence.

Sequence details

Redundant sequences indicator

When visible, click to show or hide redundant sequences.

Redundant sequences indicator box

Check box

Click to select/clear a sequence for further operations, such as keeping it in your answer set for transfer to STN. Also selectable for redundant sequences.

Description

One-line summary of an alignment. Text includes:

  • Bit score
  • E value
  • CAS Registry Number, displayed in parentheses
  • Identifier – Sequence name or identifier (may be a GenBank® number) that links to the substance details for that sequence

Descriptions are sorted by increasing E value, with the most significant alignments (lowest E values) at the top.

HSPs (High Scoring Pairs)

Length

Length of subject sequence.

Score

Applies to this pair alignment.

Expect

E value for this pair alignment.

Identities

Extent to which the query and subject sequences do not vary. Applies to this pair alignment only.

Caution: Percent Identity would provide information on the relationship between the subject sequence and your query sequence only if the HSP were to cover the entire length of both sequences.

Positives

Sum of identities and conserved residues. Applies to this pair alignment.

Frame

Applies to this pair alignment.
