Aalt joined Solvay in April 1980 as a chemist. In 1993 he moved into the Patent Department inside Solvay Pharmaceuticals. He was leading the Global Patent Information team, divided over three sites in Hannover (DE), Dijon (FR) and Weesp (NL) with overall 6 patent searchers.
During the period at Solvay he became a Board Member of WON (Dutch Patent Information User Group) and in 2016 until 2019 served as president. He was a member of SACEPO (Standing Advisory Committee of the European Patent Office) until March 2021.
Aalt is co-founder and teacher at the GO-Institute for the training course for Patent Information Specialists (PIS).
After the foundation of the European Confederacy for Patent Information Users in March 2008 he was elected as the first President of the organization called CEPIUG (Confederation of the EU-user groups). Aalt was also a member of the IPI-Award selection board and on the board of Counselors for the IPIConfex. Since May 2014 he managed his own company called Patent Information Services BV. www.patentinformationservices.nl
