Changes in retention policy for unread messages on STNmail

The retention policy for unread STNmail messages will change in 2009.  Under the new policy all unread STNmail messages will be deleted after 180 days.  The first deletions will occur on July 1, 2009, and from then on, unread messages will be deleted on a daily basis once they become 180 days old.  All read messages, however, will remain in storage indefinitely.

   Q and A

Q:   Why is CAS changing the retention policy for unread messages in STNmail?

A:   Only 10% of STNmail messages are ever read, and CAS would like to reclaim this storage space for other uses.

Q:   Will all STN accounts be affected?

A:   No. The new retention policy for unread STNmail messages will apply to STN-Columbus and STN-Tokyo accounts only.  STN-Karlsruhe deletes unread STNmail messages after 255 days.

Q:   Will my read messages be deleted after 180 days also?

A:    No. All read messages will remain in storage until you delete them.

For information about using STNmail, see the STNmail Database Summary Sheet or enter HELP MAIL at an arrow prompt.
