Patent Interchange: Gain new perspectives by grouping MARPAT patent families with FSORT

In patent searching, it can be very useful to group all patent family information together.  By viewing the entire family in one pass, you can gain insights into the importance and possible future plans for an invention.  For example, the number of member patents and the countries in which they are filed can provide you with insights about the potential significance of an invention and a company's or inventor's intentions for the product in the international marketplace.

To gain this perspective, you need an easy way to group family patent records from multiple sources or databases.  STN offers this ability at no charge with the FSORT command.  And, FSORT is now available in MARPAT.

How FSORT works

By using the information in the Patent Number (/PN) and Application Number (/APPS) fields, FSORT defines patents as members of the same family if they share a common patent, application, or priority number.

The FSORT command operates on a single L-number and can sort records from one or more of the databases in the STN Database Clusters PATENTS (or HPATENTS) and CASLINK (or HCASLINK).  Type DISPLAY CLUSTER PATENTS (or another cluster name) at the arrow prompt to display a list of the patent databases included in the cluster.

The following example shows a structure-based search in CASLINK, followed by the FSORT command and subsequent display of records from individual patent families.

Example

Search CASLINK to generate an L-number answer set.  Use FSORT to group records into patent families.  Use DISPLAY and DISPLAY PFAMILY to view records from individual families.

STN provides a list of patent families along with the answer numbers that belong to each family.  All patent families are listed, followed by individual patents that do not belong to any family and nonpatent records.  In the example above, there are 47 records in 17 multirecord families and 181 individual records (i.e., there are no records for other family members).

The DISPLAY command lets you view answers in the order that they have been sorted, i.e., Family 1 (Answers 1-6) first.

The DISPLAY PFAMILY command lets you view selected records per family.  For example, D 1 PFAM=1-3 displays the first record from Families 1-3.
