PATDPA Database Updates to End in June 2011

The German patent database PATDPA will no longer be updated after June.

PATDPA is a patent database covering all patent publications related to Germany (DE-, EP- and PCT-publications) which has been operated in close cooperation between FIZ Karlsruhe and the German Patent and Trademark Office (GPTO) for more than 20 years. The GPTO will stop production of the data format required for PATDPA in June 2011. PATDPA will be kept as a closed database for the time being.

Which alternative patent databases can be recommended to customers?

PATDPA is widely used for bibliographic patent searches and state of the art searches related to Germany. Customers also use the database for patent monitoring, statistical analyses, and specific legal status searches. In general, the INPADOC databases INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB and also the patent fulltext files PATDPAFULL, EPFULL and PCTFULL can be used instead.

Depending on the kind of search, the following is recommended:

Search Request

Recommended Patent Databases (/search field)

patent assignee and inventor names

INPAFAMDB (/PA, /PAS, /IN, /INS)

INPAFAMDB (/LSPA, /LSIN: includes reassignments and name corrections)

EPFULL (/PA, /IN)

EPFULL (/PAAO, /INAO: includes old names)

International patent classification

INPAFAMDB (/IPC)

keyword searches in title and abstract

INPAFAMDB

keyword searches including claims and patent fulltext

PATDPAFULL, EPFULL, PCTFULL

legal status information

INPADOCDB, EPFULL

patent family information

INPAFAMDB

address data of patent assignees and inventors

PATDPAFULL* (/PA, /IN, /PA.CNY, /IN.CNY)

EPFULL (/PAA, /PA.CNY, /INA, /IN.CNY, etc.)

PCTFULL (/PAA, /PA.CNY, /INA, /IN.CNY, etc.)

INPAFAMDB (/PA.CNY, /IN.CNY)

agent names and address data

PATDPAFULL* (/AG)

EPFULL (/AG, /AGA, /AG.CNY, etc.)

PCTFULL (/AG, /AGA, etc.)

supplementary protection certificates**

INPADOCDB, PATDPASPC

patent citations

INPADOCDB, EPFULL, DPCI

display of first page images

PATDPAFULL, EPFULL, PCTFULL, INPAFAMDB***

opponent names

EPFULL (/OP)

INPADOCDB (/LSOP)

* in PATDPAFULL the fields PA, IN and AG include names and address data

** Information on German supplementary protection certificates can be found in the legal status of the parent patent in INPADOCDB; moreover, INPADOCDB provides bibliographic and legal status data for German SPCs (DE I1 and DE I2 publications); additional information like product names and drug approval numbers can be found in PATDPASPC

*** First page images for 7 major countries are available in INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB until the end of March 2011; official release of INPADOC images will be soon

DGENE, USGENE and PCTGEN: STN Biosequence Searches with Enhanced Performance

FIZ Karlsruhe has enhanced the performance for biosequence searches in the databases DGENE (GENESEQTM) , USGENE (USPTO Genetic Sequence Database) and PCTGEN (World Patent Application Biosequences). Searches (RUN GETSEQ, RUN GETSIM, RUN BLAST, BATCH search) now run in a fraction of the time you have been used to.

The BLAST suite of programs has been upgraded to a newer version. mpiBLAST 1.5.0. is being used to achieve these considerable performance gains. For more information about the program, please visit: http://www.mpiblast.org/.

Since mpiBLAST 1.5.0. uses the more recent BLAST version 2.2.15 new parameter options become available.

For more detailed information on the BLAST algorithm consult the NCBI documentation at: http://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi?CMD=Web&PAGE_TYPE=BlastDocs

The online helps containing information on the BLAST program, parameter settings, default and valid values, etc. have been updated. Please see HELP OPTIONS and HELP NCBI.

The general default options and search behavior have not changed. Thus, you should not see noticeable changes to your search results when using default parameters. However, the range of accepted values may have changed.

Please note that although now running faster, the underlying program versions for the GETSEQ and GETSIM searches have not changed.

European Patent Classification Thesauri Added to INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB, GBFULL, FRFULL and PCTFULL

Thesauri for ECLA (European patent classifications) and ICO are now available in the following databases:

  • INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB
  • GBFULL
  • FRFULL
  • PCTFULL

The European patent classification codes are searchable in the fields /EPC (ECLA codes) and /ICO (in computer only codes), respectively. See HELP THESAURUS and HELP RCODES for further details. Both thesauri will be updated on a monthly basis.

The thesauri can be used with the EXPAND and SEARCH command in the EPC and ICO fields. The following relationship codes are available:

Relationship
Code Description ---------- ----------- ALL All usually required terms (BT, SELF, DEF, NT) AUTO Automatic relationship (BT, SELF, DEF, NT) BT Broader terms (BT, SELF) CODE Classification Code (SELF, CODE) DEF Definition (SELF, DEF) HIE Hierarchy terms (all broader and narrower terms) (BT, SELF, DEF, NT)KT
