If you are new to STN, use following documents and training materials to learn STN searching.

Getting started

  • Getting Started on STN (PDF) - an overview of the STN search interfaces, databases, and basic commands and features
  • Basic Commands on STN Quick Reference Card (PDF) - a list of commands and when to use them
  • STN Basics Training Modules - self-paced modules, including online practice problems and solutions, for learning the basics of reference searching 
  • STN Basics workshop manual (PDF) - an overview of keyword searching, search strategies, and setting up current-awareness alerts
  • Using CAS Databases on STN (PDF) - self-instructional booklet and practice problems for learning to search CAplus and REGISTRY

Searching with STN Express

  • Getting Started with STN Express (PDF) - help with installing STN Express and creating Logon Setups for connecting to STN
  • STN Express User Guide (PDF) - comprehensive information on using STN Express for conducting searches and processing results
  • STN Basics with Discover! workshop manual (PDF) - an overview of using Discover! wizards in STN Express to find authors, organizations, subjects, and substance information

Choosing databases

  • STN Database Summary Sheets - descriptions of all databases available on STN, including content, sources, file data, and producer
  • STN Database Clusters - groups of databases that contain similar topics or share similar features

Getting help while you're searching 

  • Help menu - When you are using STN Express, click the Help menu for STN Express Help files
  • HELP command - When you are performing command-line searches, type HELP at an arrow prompt (=>)
