Using The STN Learning Files
|
To help you practice the skills and techniques outlined in this STN Basics training piece, we are making available a limited number of STN login IDs and passwords. These login IDs are limited to the following Learning Files on the STN-Columbus service center and will enable you to conduct searches and display answers for the various practice problems. Use of these login IDs is FREE during STN-Columbus operating hours but standard CAS Information Use Policies apply. The available Learning Files are;
- LCA - the CA Learning File
- LREG - the Registry Learning File
- LMEDLINE - the Medline Learning File
Learning Files are smaller, essentially static, yet representative versions of the corresponding primary databases. The practice problems are designed so that answers will be obtained when searching in the Learning Files.
Here's How It Works:
- You will be making a connection to STN on the Web using the STN-Columbus service center.
- When you click on the "Connect" link below, your browser will connect to STN on the Web.
- You will then be prompted for a login ID and password and you should enter one of the login/password combinations provided below.*
- The STN login connection will then proceed automatically and you should see a screen with various news messages and then a date and time of entry followed by a system command prompt, the => symbol
- If you recall the lessons in this training manual you will be placed in the HOME File by default so at that point you will need to enter the name of the Learning File you wish to go to, e.g. => file LCA.
- Now you are ready to start your practice searches!
- When you are finished don't forget to log off (e.g. => log y)
* If you see a message indicating this login ID is in use you will need to use another one. If all the loginIDs are in use you will need to try again at a later time!

Note: Use of these login IDs and passwords is for training and practice only. Any other use is strictly prohibited.
