Introduction to STN Basics

Searching STN online is an interactive process. A searcher uses his/her computer to request information from a database stored on STN's computer, and STN's computer responds with what is available in that database.

The interaction between the searcher and STN's computer requires knowledge of an easy-to-learn command-based language. It will be taught to you in this module, along with search strategies that will help to optimize your search experience. If you discover that this type of interaction is not for you, consider using the Web-based service STN Easy to search for information in a subset of STN databases.

Following completion of this module you will know how to:

  • Choose a database
  • Enter a database
  • Perform a simple word search and evaluate the results
  • Refine the search
  • Display retrieved answers (bibliographic references)
