Connecting to STN via the Internet Using STN Express 8.0 with Discover! (Microsoft Windows)
STN Express 8.0 for Windows can be configured to access STN via the Internet when your computer has an Internet connection that is always on or available. Examples of this type of Internet connection include an ISDN line, cable modem, DSL, or your organization's local-area network. Creating a setup is easy using the STN Setup Wizard. Assumptions
First, launch STN Express so that the Main Menu & Toolbar appear on your desktop.

Step C

- Select the second radio button (I want to setup an STN connection using a constant Internet connection, e.g., local network, cable modem, DSL, etc.).
- Click Next.
Step D
- This window asks whether you must log in to a telnet gateway before connecting to STN. Choose the No radio button.
- Click Next.
Step F
- Enter a Setup Name. Choose a name that will help you identify this setup and distinguish it from others that you may create.
- You may type your STN Login ID and STN Password, however, these are optional. If you choose not to store this information in your logon setup for security reasons, you will be prompted for each when you log on. Another option is to enter your login ID and leave the password field blank. You will be prompted for your password each time you log on to STN.
- Click Finish to exit the STN Setup Wizard.
What if the new setup doesn't make the connection?
- Your computer might not be able to connect to STN-C by the host name (stnc.cas.org) but can connect by the IP address (134.243.5.32). Modify your logon setup to use the IP address instead.
- If you connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a modem, make sure that you establish the connection to the ISP before you try to connect to STN. You may need to verify with your ISP that you have telnet access. Alternatively, create a logon setup that uses Dial-Up Networking.
- You may be running into a firewall or gateway - a security device used on local networks to limit inbound, and sometimes outbound, Internet traffic. If a firewall exists, contact a network expert at your site to assist in navigating through the firewall and see other Internet connection tips at STN Express Technical Support.
