Connecting to STN via the Internet Using STN Express 7.0 for Windows

STN Express 7.0 for Windows can be configured to access STN via the Internet when your computer has an Internet connection that is always on or available.  Examples of this type of Internet connection include an ISDN line, cable modem, DSL, or your organization's local-area network.  Creating a setup is easy using the STN Setup Wizard.

Assumptions

  1. You can connect directly from your computer to another computer on the Internet using the telnet protocol without following special steps to log on to a telnet gateway, a firewall, or a proxy server.
  2. Your PC has a connection to the Internet that is always on.  If your Internet connection is not always on (you must dial through a modem to connect to the Internet), you can use this logon setup described here, but you must make the connection to the Internet before you try to log on to STN.  Otherwise, create a logon setup that uses Dial-Up Networking.
  3. You have an STN account with STN Columbus and a loginid.  (The steps for setting up a connection to other STN Service Centers are very similar, but this example uses STN Columbus.)

Creating Your Setup

First, launch STN Express so that the Main Menu & Toolbar appear on your desktop.

Step A

Setup

  1. Click the Setup menu...
  2. ... and select STN Setup Wizard.

Step B

Choose Service Center

  1. Read the important information behind the Before I Begin button.  You'll learn what facts you need to know to complete your new logon setup.
  2. Choose your STN Service Center.  The default is STN Columbus.
  3. The default Logon Port of X is correct for commercial accounts.  For accounts in the STN Columbus academic program, type the STN port letter for your time zone:

    Time Zone
    STN Port Letter
    Eastern
    I
    Central
    C
    Mountain
    M
    Pacific
    Z

  4. This step is complete. Click Next.

Step C

Choose connection

  1. Select the second radio button (I want to setup an STN connection using a constant Internet connection, e.g., local network, cable modem, DSL, etc.).
  2. Click Next.

Step D

Gateway?

  1. This window asks whether you must log in to a telnet gateway before connecting to STN.  Choose the No radio button.
  2. Click Next.

Step F

Finish setup

  1. Enter a Setup Name.  Choose a name that will help you identify this setup and distinguish it from others that you may create.
  2. You may type your STN Login ID and STN Password, however, these are optional.  If you choose not to store this information in your logon setup for security reasons, you will be prompted for each when you log on.  Another option is to enter your loginid and leave the password field blank. You will be prompted for your password each time you log on to STN.
  3. Click Finish to exit the STN Setup Wizard.

What if the new setup doesn't make the connection?

  • Your computer might not be able to connect to STN-C by the host name (stnc.cas.org) but can connect by the IP address (134.243.5.32) Modify your logon setup to use the IP address instead.
  • If you connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a modem, make sure that you establish the connection to the ISP before you try to connect to STN.  You may need to verify with your ISP that you have telnet access.  Alternatively, create a logon setup that uses Dial-Up Networking.
  • You may be running into a firewall or gateway - a security device used on local networks to limit inbound, and sometimes outbound, Internet traffic.  If a firewall exists, contact a network expert at your site to assist in navigating through the firewall and see other Internet connection tips at STN Express Technical Support.

If you have any questions about the Winsock Internet connection for your PC, please contact CAS Customer Care.
