Connecting to STN via an Internet Gateway or Firewall Using STN Express 7.0 for Windows

STN Express 7.0 for Windows can be configured to connect to STN via the Internet through your organization's telnet gateway, firewall, or proxy server.  [These instructions use the term gateway to include all of these.]  A gateway is a network security computer that protects your organization's network from the Internet.  There are many different gateways and ways of configuring them.  For example, some gateways require that you type a loginid and password, others require only a password, and others require only the name or address of the destination computer.  The specific instructions given here might not match your exact situation, but the general idea is the same.

Notes and Assumptions

  1. You can use the telnet protocol to connect indirectly from your computer to another computer on the Internet by first passing through a gateway.
  2. You have an STN account with STN Columbus and a loginid.  (The steps for setting up a connection to other STN Service Centers are very similar, but this example uses STN Columbus.)
  3. Your gateway loginid and password, if required, are different from your STN loginid and password and are controlled and administered by your organization (your Information Technology group, for example) and not STN.
  4. If you have a WinGate brand gateway, follow these instructions.

Creating Your Setup

First, launch STN Express so that the Main Menu & Toolbar appear on your desktop.

Step A

  1. Click the Setup menu...
  2. ... and select STN Setup Wizard.

Step B

  1. Read the important information behind the Before I Begin button.  You'll learn what facts you need to know to complete your new logon setup.  In particular, you'll need to know the exact procedure that you follow to connect to your gateway, to log on to your gateway, and to complete the connection to STN.
  2. Choose your STN Service Center.  The default is STN Columbus.
  3. The default Logon Port of X is correct for commercial accounts.  For accounts in the STN Columbus academic program, select the STN port letter for your (North American) time zone:

    Time Zone
    STN Port Letter
    Eastern
    I
    Central
    C
    Mountain
    M
    Pacific
    Z

  4. This step is complete.  Click Next.

Step C

  1. Select the second radio button (I want to setup an STN connection using a constant Internet connection, e.g. local network, cable modem, DSL, etc).
  2. Click Next.

Step D

  1. This window asks whether you must log in to a telnet gateway before connecting to STN.  Choose the Yes radio button.
  2. The host name for STN Columbus appears by default.  If you are required to connect directly to your gateway, type its name or IP address here.  If, instead, you connect to a remote host and your gateway "intercepts" the attempt, use the stnc.cas.org host name.
  3. Click Next..

Step E

Here's where knowing your exact gateway login procedure comes in.  Your gateway might require all or only some of the following pieces of information.

  1. Type the gateway's login prompt.
  2. Enter your log in name or ID that you type in response to the login prompt.
  3. Type the gateway's password prompt.
  4. Enter your gateway password.  Your password is shown as stars on the screen and is encrypted when saved on your hard drive.
  5. Type the gateway's command prompt.  This is the prompt that tells you that the gateway is ready to accept commands.
  6. Enter the command that connects you to STN Columbus.  If your gateway is of the "intercept" type, leave this box blank.
  7. Click Next.

Step F

  1. Enter a Setup Name.  Choose something that will help you distinguish this setup from others that you may create.
  2. You may key in your STN login Id and STN Password, however, this is optional.  If, for security or other reasons, you choose not to store this information in your logon setup, you will be prompted for each when you log on.
  3. Click Finish to exit the STN Setup Wizard.

What if the new setup doesn't make the connection?

  • If you connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a modem, make sure that you establish the connection to the ISP before you try to connect to STN.  You may need to verify with your ISP that you have telnet access.
  • Modify your logon setup to use the IP address 134.243.5.32 instead of the host name stnc.cas.org. Sometimes the connection to STN can be made by address even when not by name.

If you have any questions about connecting to STN through a telnet gateway, contact CAS Customer Care.
