Have you discovered missing text or garbled structures while displaying answer sets using an STN dial-up connection? If so, you may be losing data due to a flow control problem. This means the STN host sends data to your PC before your modem or PC is ready to receive it.
STN Express works with standard flow control methods including hardware (RTS/CTS) flow control and software (XON/XOFF) flow control. Since hardware flow control is more reliable than software at modem speeds of 4800 baud and higher, we recommend that you select Hardware flow control when creating a new setup or modifying an existing one. Use the following instructions to check and modify the flow control setting in an existing setup.
Depending on how you created your logon setup, you might have to modify the setup itself or your modem properties. If you upgraded STN Express from an older version, you likely specified a COM port in your logon setup, and you should modify the setup. If you created a new logon setup using the Setup Wizard, or if you specified a modem in your logon setup, check your Modems Control Panel.
Modify a modem logon setup
Step A

First, launch STN Express so that you can see the main toolbar.
- To modify an existing logon setup (or create a new one), click the Setup (key) icon.
Step B

- Highlight the name of the modem setup you wish to modify.
- Click the Modify button to open the Setup Definition dialog.
Step C

- If the Connect via box contains a COM port, then STN Express is in control of the modem settings. Proceed to step 2. If the Connect via box contains the name of your modem, then Windows is in control of the modem settings. Click the Cancel button and go to your modem control panel.
- Click the arrow and select Hardware Flow Control.
- Verify other communications settings as shown for speeds higher than 2400 baud.
- Click OK to close the dialog box..
Step D

- Click Save.
- Click OK.
Login again and see if the problem has been solved.

Continue clicking OK or Close to exit Modems Properties.
Still having trouble with lost display data?
Make sure hardware flow control is in effect. Lowering the modem's speed might help. Also, see these modem troubleshooting tips.
