CAS has recorded the 50 millionth substance in CAS REGISTRYSM, the world's most comprehensive and high-quality compendium of publicly disclosed chemical information. The recently registered substance is a novel arylmethylidene heterocycle with analgesic properties. Reaching the 50 million mark so quickly is an indicator of the accelerating pace of scientific knowledge.
CAS REGISTRY Approaches 50 Millionth Registration MilestoneAugust 2009 CAS is on track to register the 50 millionth unique chemical substances in CAS REGISTRY in September. REGISTRY is the most comprehensive and high-quality compendium of publicly disclosed chemical information. This milestone came quickly, since it was only 9 months ago that CAS registered its 40 millionth substance. In contrast, it took 33 years for CAS to register the 10 millionth compound in 1990.
CAS Patent Authority Coverage ExpandedJune 2009 CAS patent coverage has been expanded to include patent documents from the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office and Irish Patent Office. Patent and patent family references from 59 patent authorities around the world are now included in the CAS databases. Coverage includes patents (kind code A) from the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office (country code GC) back to November 2002 and patent applications (kind code A1) and short-term patent applications (kind code A2) from the Irish Patent Office (country code IE) back to January 2002. Largest Collection of Proton NMR Spectra Now Available in SciFinderScientists worldwide can now access more than 23.8 million predicted proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra in SciFinder. SciFinder is the leading research and discovery tool and the authoritative source of information on more than 41 million chemical substances. Introducing CAS - Science ConnectionsDecember 2008 In recent weeks, you may have noticed articles on the CAS web site about melamine toxicity, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry even fruit flies. These "CAS - Science Connections" showcase the value of CAS databases in light of important general-interest, science, and technology news and highlight CAS database enhancements and editorial milestones. From CAS - Science Connections articles, you can link directly to Substance Details and Reference Details in the web version of SciFinder. To read the latest article on American chestnut tree, visit http://www.cas.org/newsevents/connections/index.html CAS Databases to be Enriched with Wiley Reaction CollectionNovember 2008 In Fall 2008, the CAS databases will be enhanced with content from Wiley reaction collections. These evaluated collections represent seminal reference works, and inclusion of these reactions will give SciFinder customers access to important older reaction information. The first collection, Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (EROS), began appearing in CAS databases in September 2008. EROS is considered the definitive reference source for reagents used in organic synthesis. The addition of two other Wiley collections, Organic Syntheses and Organic Reactions, is planned for later in 2008. These collections will further enrich the CAS databases with older reactions, dating back to 1921. 2008 CAS Databases UpdateMay 2008 CAS databases - the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of disclosed chemistry-related information - have recently been updated with the following key enhancements:
CAS REGISTRYSM Enhanced with Additional Experimental SpectraMarch 2008 Since the beginning of 2008, approximately 176,000 experimental spectra have been added to the CAS REGISTRY, including:
This enhancement is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the collection of experimental spectra first made available in 2005. The CAS REGISTRY now includes more than 480,000 experimental spectra.
CAS Leads the Information Industry in Processing Chemistry-Related Korean PatentsFebruary 2008 CAS leads the information industry in processing chemistry-related Korean patents. Patent processing improvements now enable CAS to provide access to chemistry-related South Korean patent applications and granted patents accessible in the CAS databases at least four months sooner than any competitive scientific information service. CAS databases contain all South Korean chemistry-related patents issued in 2007, nearly 35,000, and have begun adding 2008 patents.
Enhanced CAS Patent Coverage Now Includes Exemplified Prophetic Substances January 2008 In December 2007, CAS database content was enhanced to include exemplified prophetic substances from new English-language basic patents. These substances may be identified (exemplified) by the inventor with a chemical name or structure (including a structure displayed in tabular format). Newly identified prophetic substances are assigned CAS Registry Number identifiers, indexed, and added to CAS databases. Reactions involving prophetic substances (whether reactants, intermediates, or products) are also added. CAS defines prophetic substances as:
CAS plans to add approximately 500,000 new prophetic substances to the CAS databases in 2008. Initially, these substances will be drawn from English-language basic patents from the following five sources:
CAS indexing of prophetic substances is considered supplemental to standard patent indexing. It does not fall under the CAS timeliness guarantee of full indexing within 27 days of receipt of patents from 9 of the major patent offices. For questions regarding the impact of prophetic substance indexing on Keep Me Posted alerts, contact CAS Customer Care. CAS Databases Enhanced with pre-1907 Records from Chemisches ZentralblattOctober 2007 Nearly 18,000 records from Chemisches Zentralblatt (issues from 1905-1906) have been added to the CAS databases. A predecessor to Chemical AbstractsTM, Chemisches Zentralblatt is a German chemical abstracting journal published from 1830 to 1969.
Traditional Medicine Patents Now Available in CAS Databases September 2007 CAS database coverage has been extended to include traditional medicine patents. In addition, approximately 10,000 of these patents from 1985-2005 are being added to CAS databases. Traditional medicine patents are selected for coverage based on the World Health Organization definition of traditional medicine: health practices, approaches, knowledge, and beliefs incorporating plant-, animal-, and mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques, and exercises applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose, and prevent illness or maintain well-being. Currently, traditional medicine patents are predominantly from China, but other Asian countries will be represented in the future as additional such patents are added to CAS databases.
