STN LIS Training Program - Instructions for Professors

CAS offers several forms of assistance with training students to search STN:

  • Login IDs and passwords
  • Two STN interface options
  • Workbooks and materials
  • CAS-led training sessions
  • Additional help

Login IDs and passwords

To provide STN access for your students:

  1. Request login IDs and passwords by completing the Request for Login IDs form (Excel, 94 KB).
  2. E-mail the form to stn-ccustomersupport@cas.org (allow 3 business days for the login IDs and passwords to arrive via e-mail).
  3. Copy each login ID and password into a separate User Agreement form (PDF, 48 KB).
  4. Ask each student to sign their respective User Agreement.
  5. Keep the signed copies to provide to CAS on request.

Please do not give a login ID to any student without a signed User Agreement. We suggest that students do not change their passwords. (If misplaced, passwords do not need to be reset.)

For distance learners, use the electronically signable version of the User Agreement (Microsoft Word, 315 KB).

Tip for hands-on classroom sessions: To provide optimal system response time, we suggest that when doing hands-on searching sessions in the classroom, students do not execute the same searching action at the same time (i.e., "follow along with me").

A search command activated at the same time by multiple users may cause system delays. While normal variation in work pace usually mitigates this issue, consider asking some students to start work from different starting points.

Two STN interface options

These interfaces are available for student access to STN:

  • STN on the WebSM - Full-function, web-based interface that can be accessed at http://stnweb.cas.org/?USERTYPE=LIS. This is a special login page for students in the STN LIS Training Program. Login IDs will not work at the standard STN on the Web login screen.
  • STN Express - Software-based interface that requires installation of STN Express. Download the software from the STN Software License and Download web site, or contact CAS Customer Care to request software on CD-ROM.

Both interfaces allow students to experience all of the searching functionality of STN and to complete all of the Skills Practice Problems.
