ABSTRACT:
The invention relates to a prepn. and purifn. of ionic liq. High purity ionic liqs. are useful as solvents for org., inorg. and biochem. reactions or as electrolytic solns. of storage batteries, secondary batteries, or fuel batteries. Org. halide salts, org. salts, halide residues, acid residues and excess alkali metals were removed from unpurified ionic liqs. using liq./liq. continuous extn. For instance, high purity N-butylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate was prepd. from N-butylpyridinium chloride and potassium trifluoromethanesulfonate with a yield of 95% (example 13).
