ABSTRACT:
Platinum and palladium bis-carbene complexes [[1,1'-RC3H2N2-3,3'-(CH2)nC3H2N2R-.kappa.C2,.kappa.C2']MX2] [1, C3H2N2 = imidazol-2-ylidene, M = Pd, Pt; X = halo, weak or non-coordinating anion; n = 1-4; R = alkyl, optionally substituted (N-hetero)aryl, preferably R = halophenyl, nitrophenyl, methoxyphenyl, mesityl, 2-pyrimidinyl], useful as catalysts for partial oxidn. of methane to methanol, stable in strong acid or oxidative solns., were prepd. by quaternization of 1-substituted imidazols with 1,.omega.-dihaloalkanes with subsequent reaction with palladium or platinum salts, preferably with PtCl2, Pd(OAc)2, Pt(acac)2, optionally including deprotonation of bis-imidazolium salts by KOtBu, NaN(SiMe3)2, or by transmetalation of in situ generated silver carbene complexes by (COD)MCl2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). In an example, dibromo[1,1'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3'-methylenebisimidazolin-2,2'-diy lidene]palladium was prepd. by reaction of 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol with CH2Br2 followed by metalation of the bis-imidazolium dibromide by 1 equiv of Pd(OAc)2 in DMSO at 40-130.degree. for 7 h. The prepd. bis-carbene chelate complexes were tested in methane partial oxidn., affording up to 25.3 TON in Me trifluoroacetate prodn. by reaction of CH4 at 30 atm with K2S2O8 in a mixt. of CF3CO2H with (CF3CO)2O at 90.degree. for 17 h.
