ABSTRACT:
Atom-transfer radical polymn. (ATRP) based on a redox reaction between a transition metal provides "living" or controlled radical polymn. of styrene, (meth)acrylates, and other radically polymerizable monomers to give polymers having a predetd. no.-av. mol. wt. and a narrow mol. wt. distribution (Mw/Mn) as low as 1.15. The polymn. is carried out in the presence of an initiator having a radically transferable atom or group, a transition-metal compd., and a ligand, where the transition-metal compd. is capable of participating in a redox cycle with the initiator and a dormant polymer chain and the ligand is a compd. contg. N, O, P, or S and can coordinate to the transition-metal through a .sigma.-bond or a C-contg. compd. coordinating to the metal by .pi.-bond. The participation of free radical intermediates in ATRP is supported by end-group anal. and stereochem. of the polymn.
