ABSTRACT:
A process for prepg. a compd. having the formula L2IrL' is provided. The process comprises: combining and L' in the presence of an org. solvent to form a mixt., wherein L is a suitable carbene ligand precursor coordinated to Ir; and L' is a bidentate ligand or two monodentate ligands, and L is different from L'. A process for prepg. a compd. with the formula L3Ir is also provided. This process comprises combining and L in the presence of alc. and a base to form a mixt., wherein L is a bidentate ligand that may form a five-membered chelate ring. Thus, silver(I) oxide mediated reaction of 1-(2-naphthyl)-3-methylbenzimidazolate iodide with iridium trichloride hydrate in 2-ethoxyethanol for 2 h at 120.degree. gave mixt. of fac- and mer-iridium(III) tris(1-(naphthyl-3-methylbenzimidazoline-2-ylidene-C,C2)) cyclometalated phosphorescent complexes.
