ABSTRACT:
Quinine and quinidine derivs. I and II (R = H, CH2Ph, phenanthren-9-yl), were prepd. for use as chiral catalysts useful for mediating enantioselective addn. reactions. The disclosed method for prepg. the Cinchona alkaloid derived catalysts comprised reacting quinine or quinidine with base and a compd. that has a suitable leaving group and converting the ring methoxy group to a hydroxy group. Another aspect of the present invention related to a method of prepg. a chiral, non-racemic compd. from a prochiral electron-deficient alkene or azo compd. or prochiral aldehyde or prochiral ketone and was comprised of the steps of reacting a prochiral electron-deficient alkene or azo compd. or prochiral aldehyde or prochiral ketone with a nucleophile in the presence of a catalyst, thereby producing a chiral, non racemic compd., wherein said catalyst is a derivatized quinine or quinidine. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a method of kinetic resoln., comprising the step of reacting racemic chiral alkene with a nucleophile in the presence of a derivatized quinine or quinidine.
