About CAS Science Spotlight

CAS Science Spotlight is a free web service that identifies the most cited chemistry-related research publications as reflected by citations found in the journals, patents, conference proceedings and other sources covered by CAS.

Additionally, CAS Science Spotlight lists the chemistry-related journal articles and patents most frequently requested by researchers using CAS electronic products.

CAS provides this information as a free service to the scientific community.

CAS Science Spotlight is divided into the following categories:

Most Requested Documents

The "Most Requested Documents in Chemistry and Related Science" category reports the most frequently requested journal articles and most frequently requested patent families based on Real-time Document Request (RDR) Ranking. CAS Science Spotlight taps into the aggregated research activity of hundreds of thousands of the world's scientists who use CAS online products, then highlights the most requested articles in chemistry and related science. Requests are based on aggregated statistics from the ChemPort service; activity of individual users is not tracked.

The "Most Requested" feature of CAS Science Spotlight is provided only for the "Chemistry and Related Science" category.

Most Intriguing Documents

The "Most Intriguing Documents in Chemistry and Related Science" category highlights the most intriguing documents from each quarter as selected by CAS scientists. CAS scientists analyze over 200,000 documents each quarter, including articles from nearly 9,500 journals and patents from 51 active patent authorities from around the world.

CAS scientists, the majority of whom have 20 or more years of experience, characterize a document as "intriguing" if it contains new, novel, or trendsetting scientific research that is likely to be of growing interest over time.

Most Cited Documents

The "Most Cited Documents in Chemistry and Related Science" category lists the journal articles, patents, and journal titles most frequently cited in documents published in 1999-2005 and included in the CAS database. This category spans the entire breadth of the CAS database, including information in life sciences and a wide range of other chemistry-related scientific disciplines.

The "Most Cited Documents in Medical Sciences" category lists the previously published articles most often cited in new articles published in 1999-2005. The most cited articles are found in the CAS database sections that address pharmacology, chemistry aspects of physiology, toxicology, pathological biochemistry, immunochemistry, radiation biochemistry, nutrition, and veterinary medicine. This category includes only the CAS sections that deal with these medical sciences topics.

The "Most Cited Documents in Materials Science" category lists the most cited journal articles that appeared in journals published in 1999-2005, and which have been indexed in CA sections related to the production, processing, and characteristics of engineering materials. This category spans only the materials science sections of the CAS database.

The "Most Cited Documents in Chemistry" category shows the most cited journal articles indexed in selected CAS database chemistry sections and cited in journals published in 1999-2005. This category spans only the chemistry sections of the CAS database. It does not include CA sections covering related fields, e.g., geological sciences.

CAS Databases

The CAS databases represent the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of chemistry and related scientific information, covering nearly 9,500 journals, patents from 50 active patent-issuing authorities, conference proceedings, and other sources. These databases are used in research around the world, by hundreds of thousands of scientists, academic leaders, students, and researchers of every description.
