The synthesis is reported of mesoporous solids from the calcination of aluminosilicate gels in the presence of surfactants. The material possesses regular arrays of uniform channels, the dimensions of which can be tailored (16-.gtoreq.100 .ANG.) through the choice of surfactant, auxiliary chems. and reaction conditions. Possibly the formation of these materials takes place using a liq.-crystal templating mechanism, in which the silicate material forms inorg. walls between ordered surfactant micelles.
