The invention relates to an efficient method for the selective conversion, under mild conditions in aqueous medium, of gaseous alkanes (ethane, propane, and butane) and liquid alkanes (n-pentane, n-hexane, cyclopentane, and cyclohexane) to carboxylic acids having an addnl. carbon atom. The reactions were carried using carbon monoxide at low temperature (25-60 degree C) in aqueous acetonitrile containing a peroxidisulfate salt as oxidant, in the presence or absence of a catalyst.
