The process comprises catalytic conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol using multi-metal catalyst at 120-300 degrees and 1-12 MPa hydrogen under hydrothermal condition, wherein the multi-metal catalyst uses one or more transition metals of Groups 8, 9 and 10 selected from iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, iridium and platinum and one or more components selected from the metallic state, carbide, nitride or phosphide of molybdenum and/or tungsten as active components.
