Abstract:
The invention provides an improved, highly efficient method for prepg. 5-(2-ethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (I), and its salts, in particular its pharmaceutically acceptable salts.  Compd. I·HCl was prepd. via formylation of 4-iodo-1-tritylimidazole; the resulting 1-tritylimidazole-4-carboxaldehyde underwent condensation with phthalide to give 2-(1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)indan-1,3-dione, which underwent ethylation to give 2-ethyl-2-(1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)indan-1,3-dione, which underwent hydrolysis to give 2-ethyl-2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)indan-1,3-dione, which underwent redn. to give I·HCl.
