The invention relates to a process for converting a feed stream comprising oxygenated lower aliph. hydrocarbon compds., esp. methanol, to a product stream comprising arom. hydrocarbons, esp. benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), which process comprises a step of contacting said feed with a catalyst compn. La-M/zeolite, which consists essentially of from 0.0001 to 20% of lanthanum; from 0.0001 to 20% of at least one element M selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, copper, cerium and cesium; zeolite in hydrogen form; and optionally a binder. Thus, lanthanum nitrate 0.6 g was dissolved in 100 g water; and molybdenum oxide 0.5 g, zinc oxide 0.06 g, cupric nitrate trihydrate 2.6 g were dissolved in 100 g water at 85°; both of the solns. were mixed with ZSM 5 10 g at 85° for 8 h to give ZSM 5 loaded with 2% La, 3% Mo, 0.5% Zn, and 7% copper.
