Abstract:
The diastereomer of an azabicyclo-C6-10-alkanol derivative having a methine (with a hydroxyl group as a substituent) as an asym. carbon (e.g., a trans-3-substituted-3-azabicyclo[3.2.1]-8-ol derivative) is isomerized in the presence of a transition metal complex to produce an excess amount of the thermodynamically stable diastereomer (e.g., a cis-3-substituted-3-azabicyclo[3.2.1]-8-ol derivative). This invention provides cis-3-substituted-3-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-8-ol derivative which is useful as an intermediate for agrochems. and pharmaceuticals.  Thus, nitrogen gas was bubbled into a solution of 3-benzyl-3-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-8-ol (cis/trans isomer ratio = 49/51) in toluene; potassium tert-butoxide and dichlorotris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium were added to said solution; the resulting mixture was refluxed for 7 h to give, after workup and crystallization of the product, cis-3-benzyl-3-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-8-ol in 69% yield.
