The invention pertains to a process for the preparation of 1-[[[4-(aminocarbonyl)pyridinio]methoxy]methyl]-2-[(hydroxyimino)methyl]-pyridinium dimethanesulfonate (HI-6 dimethanesulfonate), a bis-pyridinium oxime antidote to certain organophosphate nerve agents.  For example, O-acetyloxime-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde (preparation given) was reacted with oxybismethanol dimethanesulfonate in methylene chloride and acetonitrile to form an intermediate compound, which was reacted with isonicotinamide to afford an O-protected HI-6 product precursor.  The precursor obtained above was then de-protected with ethanol to give HI-6 dimethanesulfonate as a final product. Advantageously, the title process for HI-6 production avoids the use of highly toxic or carcinogenic reagents, and is a convenient industrial scale process in which product yield and purity are com. satisfactory.
