Use of BuSnO for regioselective catalytic diol mono-tosylation at a concentration lower than 2 mol% is claimed.  Use of Y2SnO and acetals (I; Y = alkyl, Ph, PhCH2) in a catalytic process for regioselective diol mono-tosylation is also claimed. Thus, acetic acid 8-fluoro-11-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-10-yl ester was tosylated with TsCl, diisopropylethylamine, and 2,2-dibutyl-1,3,2-dioxastannolane (preparation given) at 0.05% to give 97% conversion to primary tosylate and >99:1 selectivity for monotosylation.
