The present invention relates to processes for preparing azoxystrobin (I, W = (E)-C(CO2CH3)=CHOCH3) and its analog I (W = C(CO2CH3)CH(OCH3)2) or their mixture, which comprises either (a) reacting the corresponding chloride II (W = same as above) with 2-cyanophenol or a salt thereof, or (b) reacting III with the corresponding phenol IV (W = same as above), both in the presence of between 0.1 and 2 mol % of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO).  The first method was detailed, and it was demonstrated that small amount of DABCO is enough for the high yield.  Effects of solvent and adding sequence on the yield were investigated.  Preparation of phenol IV (W = (E)-C(CO2CH3)=CHOCH3) used in the second method was described, and an involving intermediate, Me 2-(2-benzyloxy)phenyl-3,3-dimethoxypropanoate, is claimed.
