Abstract:
Methane and natural gas feedstocks are converted in two steps to alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons by: (1) conversion of the methane-containing feedstock with a dehydrocyclization catalyst to aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrogen, followed by (2) alkylation of the aromatic hydrocarbons with an alkylating agent. Dehydrocyclization is carried out under non-oxidizing conditions, in the presence of H2, H2O, CO, or CO2 (e.g., for improving catalyst activity and stability), at 400-1200 degree C (preferably 600-950 degree C), 1-1000 kPa, and weight space velocity <1000 h-1. The dehydrocyclization catalyst can be chosen from Mo, W, and Re supported on ZSM-5 zeolite, SiO2, or Al2O3; suitable alkylating agents include ethylene, synthesis gas (e.g., in a Fischer-Tropsch process), MeOH, or di-Me ether.  The alkylation catalyst can also include a selectively activated component (e.g., the zeolite) to improve the selectivity to alkylation of the aromatic hydrocarbon at a specific position (e.g., p-selectivity for production of p-xylene). The catalyst component is selectively activated by reaction with a silane or by treating the component with a phosphorus or magnesium or metal oxide treating agent.
