Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for synthesizing 2-methoxymethyl-1,4-benzenediamine (I), its derivs. II [R1-R3 = (un)substituted (hetero)alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl; R4 = H, hydroxyalkyl, (un)substituted alkyl, etc.; R5 = H, (un)substituted (hetero)alkyl, (un)substituted (un)satd. alkyl systems; R6, R7 = H, OH, alkyl, etc.; n = 0-3] and the salts thereof, which comprises a reductive amination step. The preferred final product is 2-methoxymethyl-1,4-benzenediamine (I). Thus, methylating 2-hydroxymethylphenol in MeOH followed by nitrosation of the resulting 2-methoxymethylphenol, condensation of III with hydroxylamine, and redn. of IV in the presence of a catalyst afforded the final product I.  These compds. may be used as primary intermediates in compns. for dyeing keratin fibers.
