This invention relates to a novel process for the prepn. of timberone useful for perfume or cosmetics.  Aldol condensation of citral with 2-pentanone gave (E/Z)-Me(CH2)2COCH:CHCH:CMe(CH2)3CH:CMe2 which was cyclized using H3PO4 to give cyclohexene I.  I was then hydrogenated to give the title compd. in 91% yield.
