BizInt Smart Charts and New STN Collaboration
Extends and Optimizes Intellectual Property Search
9-24-2015 2-51-44 PMWorkflow

On September 1, 2015, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and BizInt Solutions, Inc. announced a collaboration to empower search professionals using new STN to seamlessly transition from precision searching to customized reporting and analysis for Intellectual Property (IP) research, discovery and decision support. The introduction of a new export format in new STN earlier this summer allows the optimized integration of STN search results into the culminating, post-search analysis stage of the IP search workflow.

BizInt Smart Charts for Patents enables individuals to aggregate, examine, refine and act upon information from myriad patent information resources. New STN, operated jointly by CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe worldwide, is a modern, Web-based search solution for IP professionals, offering access to essential, curated content through an intuitive, project-oriented interface. By linking the reporting and analytical expertise of BizInt Smart Charts with the unparalleled content and search power of new STN, search professionals can now more effectively find the answers and insight needed to drive sound business decisions.

BizInt Smart Charts for Patents 4.0 supports new STN value-added bibliographic databases, including CAplus and Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM) from Thomson Reuters, non-patent literature databases and all full-text patent databases. Support for additional databases, including substance and structure databases, will be added in upcoming releases of BizInt Smart Charts. For more information on creating reports from new STN answer sets using BizInt Smart Charts for Patents 4.0, click here.

patentpicks_logo1A Look at Recent Patenting Activity in Insulin Drug Delivery

Type 2 diabetes affects tens of millions of people around the world. Left untreated, the metabolic disorder can eventually lead to blindness, stroke, kidney and heart disease, nerve degeneration, lower limb amputation and increased susceptibility to infection. People with the disease have high blood glucose levels because they've developed resistance to insulin, a peptide hormone (5.808 kilodaltons) that regulates glucose metabolism. The standard treatment for type 2 diabetes is a combination of exercise, diet changes and medication to increase the release of insulin from the pancreas. However, as the disease progresses, many patients require insulin replacement therapy because natural production of the hormone diminishes. Traditionally, these therapies involve injecting insulin under the skin. This can be painful and inconvenient for patients, which makes them less likely to maintain proper treatment regimens. Click here to learn more about recent patenting activity in insulin drug delivery.

New Version of Emtree Introduces over 800 New Terms to EmbaseTM on STN

The September 2015 version of Emtree added over 800 new preferred terms for Embase and Embase Alert searching on classic STN platforms, as well as on new STN. The new terms include:

  • 258 drug terms (assigned to the Chemicals and Drugs facet)
  • 558 non-drug terms

In total, Emtree now includes 72,543 preferred terms.

Further information on the latest changes to Emtree may be found here. If you are running alerts in Embase, please consider reviewing the lists of new and replacement terms in case your strategies need to be updated.

Q.
My reaction search in CASREACT® on STN called for one-step reactions (1/NS), but my results included a reaction with two stages and two substages. Why was that answer retrieved by my search? What are the differences between reaction steps, stages and substages?

A. The following reaction was retrieved:

help_desk_stn_september_news1

The reaction step shows a single conversion of reactant A to product B. Conversions are generally bounded by either a yield or single experimental procedure. Because the reaction meets the criteria of the number of steps being equal to 1 (i.e., 1/NS), it is a valid answer for this query.

Multiple reaction stages may be included in reactions. In the example above, there are two reaction stages. Each stage of the reaction reflects at least one experimental change, e.g., addition of a new reactant, reagent, catalyst or quenching solvent. In this case, the second stage includes the addition of a new reagent, methanol.

Reaction substages are defined as changes in reaction conditions (changes in the time, temperature, pressure and/or pH within a specific stage) with no change in the reaction participants. As examples, see the two substages associated with Stage 1 above.
