NFAIS 2008 Miles Conrad News Release
Philadelphia, PA, February 25, 2008 - The National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS - www.nfais.org), the premier membership association for organizations that aggregate, organize and facilitate access to information, has announced that Robert J. Massie, President, CAS will be presented with the prestigious Miles Conrad Award on February 25, 2008 at the NFAIS Annual Conference and 50th Anniversary celebration in Philadelphia, PA. According to Kevin Bouley, NFAIS President, the objective of the Miles Conrad Memorial Lecture, established in 1965 in commemoration of NFAIS founder, G. Miles Conrad, is to recognize and honor those members of the Information Community who have made significant contributions to the field of information science and to NFAIS itself. "Bob Massie is a well-known and respected member of the global Information Community. He took the helm of CAS in 1992 when the migration from a print to digital environment was beginning to have a significant impact on traditional information services. Under his leadership, CAS was transformed and emerged to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2007 as the leading provider of information in chemistry and the related sciences. I speak for the entire NFAIS Board in saying that we are very pleased to bestow our organization's highest honor upon him." When being told about his selection as the Miles Conrad Lecturer, Massie expressed gratitude at the honor bestowed. "CAS, under the leadership of Dale Baker in 1958, was one of the founding members of NFAIS. And Dale himself was given this honor in 1974. It is both humbling and rewarding to achieve the same level of recognition, especially in the year that NFAIS celebrates its 50th anniversary. I am grateful to the NFAIS Board for adding my name to the list of distinguished leaders in the information community." Others have recognized Massie's work as well. In 1998, he received the Executive of the Year award from the Industry & Technology Council of Central Ohio. And in 2003 he was the recipient of the Patterson-Crane Award for Outstanding Contribution to Providing Chemical Information Services, from the Columbus and Dayton, Ohio sections of the American Chemical Society. Before joining CAS, Massie, had extensive publishing industry experience. He served as President and CEO of Gale Research, Inc., at the time a subsidiary of the Thomson organization. In the 1980s, Mr. Massie held senior executive positions with the Torstar Corporation, the largest newspaper and book publishing company in Canada. Prior to that, he was a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. in New York, where his clients included the General Electric Company and the New York Times Company. He also practiced law with the firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. Massie is a member of the Boards of Directors of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, TechColumbus, and the Columbus Partnership and has also served on several private and public company boards. He has authored a number of papers, and speaks frequently to industry groups on the subject of scientific research in the digital age. Mr. Massie holds a joint J.D./MBA degree from Columbia University, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar; he earned a B.A. with honors from Yale. Mr. Massie joins a list of Miles Conrad Lecturers who are representative of the leaders and creative thinkers of the information world. His lecture, entitled CAS in the New Information Order, will be made available on the NFAIS web site in March 2008. This was the 42nd such lecture in a series that has continued unbroken since it began in 1968.
