CAS Registers 50 Millionth Substance

Arylmethylidene Heterocycle
(5Z)-5-[(5-Fluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]-2-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-4(5H)-thiazolone

On September 7, CAS Registry Number 1181081-51-5 was assigned to the arylmethylidene heterocycle at right.  CAS REGISTRY, the most comprehensive and high-quality compendium of publicly disclosed chemical information, now includes 50 million organic and inorganic substances.  More than 100 million CAS Registry Numbers have been assigned to organic and inorganic substances and biosequences.

The 50 millionth substance was identified by CAS scientists in the Examples section of a nearly 200-page patent document:

  • Attardo, G.; Tripathy, S.; Gagnon, M. Preparation of arylmethylidene heterocycles as novel analgesics. World Patent WO 2009/097695, Aug 13, 2009.

According to the patent, "Few therapeutics are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies for the treatment of neuropathic pain."  To address this concern, a series of novel arylmethylidene heterocycles were synthesized and evaluated for analgesic properties in an experimental model system.  In the assessment, several of the newly synthesized substances produced statistically relevant reductions in neuropathic pain and are therefore candidate agents for future analgesic drug development.
