CAS REGISTRYSM BLAST® Upgrade Improves Search Capabilities and Results Ranking

May  28, 2014 -

Effective May 28, 2014, the BLAST software used in CAS REGISTRY BLAST will be upgraded to version 2.2.29. CAS REGISTRY BLAST is the integrated software and data solution created by CAS for sequence searching in STN Express® and STN® on the WebSM. The backbone to CAS REGISTRY BLAST is BLAST software, developed by the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Key changes in this version are as follows:

  • Expanded search capabilities: It is now possible to search proteins that include J (leucine or isoleucine) and/or O (pyrrolysine) residues.
  • Better results ranking: Sequences with gaps are now scored differently. Instead of a score for each individual sequence separated by a gap, a score is computed for the entire sequence including the gap. This often results in gapped sequences appearing lower in the BLAST report than they would have before.
  • Low complexity filtering settings updated: Make sure to verify your search settings for best results.

CAS REGISTRY BLAST continues to provide unique value to searchers by covering sequences from patents as well as journals, and by providing access to records in CAplusSM where the sequences were reported.
