MEDLINE, produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), has more than 17 million references that cover all areas in the field of biomedicine:

  • Allergies
  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biomedicine

More than 99% of MEDLINE references are selected from journal articles.

75% of MEDLINE's references represent publications in the English language.

Abstracts are available for approximately 50% of the MEDLINE references. Records added before 1975 do not have abstracts.

Coverage

  • 1949 to the present
  • NLM monitors nearly 4,800 biomedical journals
  • MEDLINE references are taken from the following sources:
    - Index Medicus
    - Index to Dental Literature
    - HealthSTAR database
    - International Nursing Index
    - chapters in the books or symposia from 1976-1981
    - the OLDMEDLINE database (1949-1965)
    - In-Process records (beginning August 12, 2001)the latest documents; added before they have been completely indexed for inclusion in MEDLINE

Update frequency

Approximately 14,000 references are added to MEDLINE each week.
