SciFinder Content at a Glance - Biomedical Information

SciFinder includes MEDLINE - references to journal articles discussing biomedicine.

Benefit

You can quickly locate references to published articles covering a wide variety of biomedical topics.

Content

MEDLINE, produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), has more than 18 million references that cover all areas in the field of biomedicine:

  • Allergies
  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biomedicine

More than 99% of MEDLINE references are selected from journal articles.

75% of MEDLINE's references represent publications in the English language.

Abstracts are available for approximately 50% of the MEDLINE references. Records added before 1975 do not have abstracts.

Coverage

  • 1947 to the present
  • NLM monitors nearly 4,800 biomedical journals.
  • MEDLINE references are taken from the following sources:
    - Index Medicus
    - Index to Dental Literature
    - HealthSTAR database
    - International Nursing Index
    - Chapters in the books or symposia from 1976-1981
    - The OLDMEDLINE database (1947-1965)
    - In-Process records (beginning August 12, 2001) - the latest documents; added before they have been completely indexed for inclusion in MEDLINE

Update frequency

Approximately 14,000 references are added to MEDLINE each week.
